On 21 September, Gen. Gilbert Diendere announced that he would hand over power to a civilian transitional government one week after seizing power in a military coup. The coup faced widespread international and internal condemnation. West Africa already faces widespread instability because of Boko Haram actions in Nigeria and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. This coup increases instability and may precipitate more coups in the region as stability decreases.
