PHILIPPINES: Massacre of Civilians

On 23 November, 57 people were massacred in the Philippines' southern region of Maguindanao.  The victims were on their way to the Commission on Elections office when they were stopped by a group of armed men.  The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recovered the bodies of politicians, supporters and journalists.  Andal Ampatuan Jr., mayor of Datu Unsay town in Maguindanao, is a key suspect and has been taken into custody at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detention center in Manila.  Political rivalry is believed to be the reason for the murders.
