EGYPT: Lower Court Cages Removed

On 30 September, Justice Minister Ahmad Al Zend announced that iron cages will be removed from the lower courts used to prosecute minor offenses. While some court room security concerns remain, this decision is seen by many as a step towards greater human rights in the nation. Should this step within the justice system produce fairer trials and more order, it is possible that continued reforms within the courts will be implemented, allowing a more open society overall.
