HUNGARY: Military Authorized Use of “Non-lethal Weapons” on Refugees

On 21 September, Hungary’s Parliament passed a law authorizing the use of rubber bullets and tear gas on Syrian refugees by the nation’s military. While this law may improve order by giving more flexibility to the authorities, use of force may spark a violent, destabilizing response by refugees as well as international condemnation over such forceful actions.
