SAUDI ARABIA: Annual Haj Begins in Mecca

On 22 September, Islamic pilgrims in the holy city of Mecca began the Haj as they traveled the relatively short distance to the city of Mina. Nearly 2 million people are expected to participate in the Haj this year, amid heightened security concerns over possible attacks by militants in Yemen, and the spread of the MERS virus.
