SAUDI ARABIA: Haj Stampede Kills Hundreds

On 24 September, a stampede at the valley of Mina, near Mecca, led to over 700 casualties and over 850 injuries. The incident took place during a major ritual of the Haj that involves throwing stones at pillars that signify the devil, where Muslims believe Satan tempted Abraham. While the cause of the incident is under investigation, it is possible that major changes surrounding the preparation for the Haj will be implemented to prevent future tragedy.
